On-Line Puppy Raiser Application - Please Read Carefully: 1 of 3

Criteria for Placement of a Leader Dog Puppy
A Leader Dog Puppy placed in your home must be a family project. Your puppy will require lots of T.L.C. - Tender Loving Care - from all members of the family.

Following are a few requirements and questions a family should consider before applying for a Leader Dog Puppy. We will be entrusting a puppy to your care for potential Leader Dog training for one year from highly selected Leader Dog breeding stock.

Qualities a Leader Dog Must Have:
  • A Sound Dog -

By SOUND we mean a dog that is not afraid of noise, such as heavy traffic and general household noise and of confusion such as vacuum cleaners, fans and slippery floors. This problem can be overcome by raising the dog in the house with routine exposure to these items. Walks by busy roads will accustom the dog to traffic. Learning to ride comfortably in a car is a mandatory experience. By building the dog's confidence, the chances of successfully completing formal training as an adult will be greatly enhanced.

  • A Friendly Dog -

By FRIENDLY we mean that a Leader Dog must accept everyone as his friend. Keep in mind that a Leader Dog is NOT trained to protect its master. Their sole purpose is safe guidance. Aggressive behavior towards other animals or people is grounds for rejection from the program.

  • A Happy Dog -

By HAPPY we mean a dog that is content and relaxed wherever it may be. Some dogs are only happy in their own surroundings. A Leader Dog travels and should be relaxed and content in a strange environment. Frequent walks in new areas and exposure to strangers is required.
Considerations on Raising a Leader Dog Puppy:
  • What facilities are available for the dog? Do you have a fenced in yard? LEADER DOG PUPPIES ARE NEVER ALLOWED OFF LEASH UNLESS IN A FENCED ENCLOSURE!!!!!

  • Where will you keep the puppy while you are at work? On vacation?

  • Are you willing to see your puppy counselor or attend monthly meetings if available?

  • Are ALL members of the family willing and able to welcome a new puppy into the home?
